Acoustic Guitar For Contemporary Players Level II expands on critical concepts covered in the first workshop. Knowledge is key to creative expansion allowing guitarists and songwriters full access to their creative capabilities for today’s music.

Level II takes the open-position GCFDAE chords to the next level. All major, major7, dominant 7, minor, minor 7 shapes are explored and put to practical work and get to the really cool sounds which are a part of the guitar palette. Barre chords and their inter-relationships to open-position chords are built upon for quick learning and physical deployment.

Workshop: Guitar Rigs & Pedal Boards ‣

Having a command of the skills needed to get the most from your guitar, amp and pedal board rig is essential to any contemporary guitarist serious about their sound.

A look into the common characteristics found in classic tube amps and acoustic guitar amps as well as the characteristic woods found in the classic electric and acoustic guitars opens this clinic.

An examination of the four effect groups; gain based, modulation based, ambient based and filter based as well as their common order is then explored. In addition, the most common order of placement in the pedal chain and a look at each individual processing effect is then explored.

Last we will study the pedal board rigs common to the blues, rock, jazz, country and pop genres of music in order to get a more convincing sound for each style.

By the end of the seminar you will be able to understand the factors that determine a guitar and amplifier's tonal characteristics, identify how effects are categorized, combined and how each pedal works to process your sound.

A comparative analysis between the similarities, differences, developments and advancements of improvisational instrumental found in North India and North America. In depth analysis of the Raga and the Jazz forms as a base for improvisation.

Mosby is one of a handful of musicians capable of translating the connections between India, western musics roots and its development in America.

Master Class: Advanced Improvisation ‣

Develop your instrumental soloing & performance skills by learning advanced techniques to improvise over chord changes, both in traditional jazz standards and complex modern harmony.

Advanced Improvisation explores advanced techniques that great jazz guitarists use in order to improvise over chord changes. Topics included cover rhythmic considerations as well as effective use of scales, arpeggios, and modes. Altered pentatonic scales, across-the-bar-line phrasing, diminished scales, melodic tension on dominant chords, blues in jazz, and nonfunctional harmonic improvisation.

Some comping and chords are covered but it is assumed this knowledge has been assimilated. Ways to gain a more complete knowledge of the guitar fretboard will be addressed as this is a major component and barrier to learning improvisation.

Master Class: Advanced Blues Guitar ‣

A solid blues understanding provides instant added depth to any guitarists signature bag of tricks which can then be applied to any other style of music-jazz, rock, pop, classical. Guitarists with this basic foundation gain control in harmony, form, feel, time and rhythm and improvisation.

The basic 12-bar blues harmony and some of its derivations explored along with some basic rhythm guitar groove technique in order to navigate form, basic chord movement and turns arounds.

Next a method for learning the basic major and minor pentatonic scale from the open position thru its relative five positions is explored as well as the blues scale. Classic riffs from blues greats BB King, Magic Slim and Buddy Guy are then applied to aid learning and finger board knowledge.

Todd will come and be a featured guest composer/lecturer to set either his current CD arrangements for On Eagle Mountain on student ensembles for a live performance, or one of his hybrid compositions dealing with the improvisational fusion of Indian raga and Traditional Jazz in a world music context. This is a unique way to explore compositional structure as a basis for improvisational frame work in real time.
